Drinking Perfume
Tuesday, January 25th, 2005My neighbor across the street (mom of the cute Mohawk girls) just had a tiny little baby last week. I went with Achta (14 year old sister) to go visit today. So we go in, exchange greetings, etc. etc. and my neighbor offered me this cup of brown liquid. Chadians drink a lot of tea, especially when someone comes to visit, so I assumed it was tea. I had the cup almost to my mouth when Achta yelled, “Kate! Nonononononon!” It was perfume! I was supposed to put it on my hair and clothes! Thank god Achta was there or it could have been a lot more embarrassing. Haha. I guess that’s why they say Peace Corps is a two year lesson in falling on your face. Anyway, the baby is tiny and adorable. Her mom is from the east of Chad and is really light skinned. She’s much more Arabic looking than my family. The baby is white and everyone laughed when I called her a nasara baby. I love that I can be witty; even in Arabic.
